Anyone can call themselves a coach in this unregulated, unlicensed, undisciplined industry. Consequently, most are unqualified to be a senior executive coach. Although most coaches are not capable of delivering the goods, how can you judge quality coaching without a frame of reference?   1. A long history of running organizations as a senior executive. This provides the credibility to sit at the table and be an effective coach.
  2. A natural developer of people. The hallmark of a productive career is hiring people better than oneself and mentoring leaders who went on to achieve in significant ways.
  3. Attending and graduating from a top coach training program – this requires criteria #1 and #2 above – and receiving certification from a credible accrediting body (not ICF).
